The life of Sarah Bartlett Wicks

Biography

Sarah Bartlett married John Wicks on December 17, 1789. Known as Sally in the local history of Paris, a town in central New York State, she belonged to the Bartlett family of Connecticut; the family record identifies her parents as Deacon John Bartlett and Lois Chidsey. Her marriage joined that family to a man whose earlier life had included seafaring and a move from Long Island, New York, to North Guilford, the inland part of Guilford, Connecticut.

Henry C. Rogers's history of Paris places John in the town in 1800. It records that he spent three weeks in the old church before settling on the pioneer road opposite Major Royce's property. The account dates John’s arrival, while Sarah’s own journey is less precisely known. Rogers names Sally as his wife and says that the couple had seven children.

Sarah’s children included Edward. The family had moved beyond its Connecticut beginnings, while the marriage recorded in 1789 remained the link between those earlier roots and the Wicks household in Paris.

John died in May 1836. Sarah survived him until 1842, after more than forty-six years of marriage and several years of widowhood. Her memorial places her burial at Hillcrest Cemetery in Paris.

The family chronology places Sarah’s birth in 1769 and records the birth of their son Edward Bartlett Wicks in 1805.

The burial listing associates Sarah Bartlett Wicks with Hillcrest Cemetery, Paris, Oneida County, New York, United States.
