Iron, credit and a name on a banknote

The goods in Francis Wood Carpenter’s warehouses were the working materials of nineteenth-century New England, a region in the northeastern United States: iron for machinery, steel for shafts, roofing metal, horseshoes, nails and carriage fittings. By 1892, Congdon & Carpenter occupied three warehouses and part of a fourth, extending through a block in Providence, Rhode Island’s capital, between Canal Street and North Main Street. Carpenter had then been with the business for forty years.

Born at Seekonk, Massachusetts, on June 24, 1831, Francis was the son of Edmund Carpenter and Lemira Tiffany. His adult life took shape across the nearby Massachusetts–Rhode Island border, in the commercial world of Providence. His first marriage was to Anna Davis Barney. After her death, he married Harriet Zeviah Pope in 1867; their children included Gilbert Congdon Carpenter.

The firm he eventually headed had passed through several Congdon partnerships before his presidency. In January 1892 it became an incorporated company with capital of $500,000. Francis was president, with J. H. Congdon as vice-president. Its business reached across New England, supplying manufacturers and tradespeople whose work required reliable stocks of metal and hardware. Its specialty was iron and steel for machinery, but its catalogue also reached into the horse-powered economy: harness, carriage builders’ supplies, horse blankets and saddlery hardware.

Those different goods help explain the breadth of Carpenter’s business interests. The same contemporary account names him as president of the Rhode Island Perkins Horseshoe Company and the American National Bank, and as a director of the Providence Washington Insurance Company. He occupied positions in the supply of industrial materials, the financing of business and the insurance of property. The 1892 publication praised him extravagantly; the offices and merchandise it lists give a more concrete picture of his activities.

One small family possession connects that banking career to the present: a ten-dollar banknote reported in family correspondence to bear his name. Research identifies Carpenter as a national-bank president and note signer. The family’s recollection therefore preserves an object associated with a specific part of his working life, rather than simply a story that he had been wealthy.

His money also entered the religious and architectural life of Providence. Central Congregational Church records that Carpenter paid for enlargement and improvement of its Roosevelt organ after the instrument moved from Benefit Street to the church’s new Angell Street building. He later built his residence beside the church; the house became known as Hamilton House. The church’s own history traces some wooden pipes from that older instrument through later organ installations.

Francis died on December 1, 1922, aged ninety-one. He was buried at Newman Cemetery in East Providence, where the memorial record also connects him with his parents and his two marriages.

Harriet’s given name also appears as Zerviah in the family record.
