Biography

Pierre Fontaine dit Bienvenu was a corporal in Louvigny’s company when he arranged to marry Marguerite Anthiaume, the widow of André Jarret de Beauregard, in 1692. Their contract provided for the support and religious instruction of her children from the first marriage. FONT

Madeleine’s later account places Fontaine with Marguerite and children in a canoe approaching Verchères during the attack of October 1692. She describes escorting them into the fort. Fontaine then helped guard those sheltering inside and refused to abandon the defense while Madeleine remained. ACCOUNT
