The life of Jessie Spence Stewart

Text size

Biography

Jessie Spence Stewart was remembered in Lismore, in northern New South Wales, Australia, for helping sick neighbours when professional nursing was difficult to obtain. Her obituary also records her work at St Paul's Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir.

Scottish-born, Jessie married James Jolly and raised a family in northern New South Wales. Their son Alexander, born at Wardell in 1887, became an architect. Around 1895 she took the children to Muthill, their father's birthplace in Perthshire, Scotland, for a visit lasting about two years.

Later she spent much of her time with her daughters in Dalby, inland from Brisbane in Queensland, Australia. She died there on May 5, 1932, at the home of her daughter Jessie, Mrs. Shaw Thompson.
