The life of J. August Anderson

Biography

J. August Anderson, also recorded as John Anderson, worked as a storeman at Port Adelaide, the port district of Adelaide in South Australia. He married Maria Prideaux there in December 1882. Their wedding announcement uses John, while later family records use August; the South Australian biographical index gives his father’s name as Andrew.

The family later lived at Lameroo, an inland South Australian town, and then Prospect, a suburb of Adelaide. His 1942 death notice names eight children: Elizabeth, Florence, John, William, Samuel, Dorothy, Annie and Eric. By then Maria had died, and August’s address was 30 Le Hunte Avenue, Prospect.

He died at a private hospital on May 27, 1942, described as being in his ninetieth year. That wording suggests birth around 1852–1853, rather than establishing an exact date. His funeral took place the following day at Cheltenham Cemetery.
