Biography
Albert Edmund Good, also recorded as Alfred, was born at Dalby, Queensland. In a 1949 newspaper interview, A. E. Good identified his father as Thomas Charles Good and his grandfather as a Royal Navy chaplain. His work took him along coach routes including Victor Harbor, Goolwa, Willunga and Mount Pleasant. He recalled driving the last five-horse Adelaide-to-Mount Pleasant coach in 1919, carrying 25 passengers, and starting a motor service to Mannum in 1920. He reported covering nearly a million miles over 23 years.
After losing the mail contract, he ran an Eden Valley service. He also recalled Light Horse service and guarding the Frome Road camp during the South African War. His brother-in-law Harry Alexander, a Renmark pioneer, had encouraged the Goods to settle at Renmark before they moved to Payneham. At the time of the interview he had lived in Ackland Street, Adelaide, for about 30 years. These career details are his recollections as reported by the Chronicle.
