Biography
Joseph A. “Joe” Carpenter Jr. (1921–2014) was an artist, illustrator and cartoonist associated with Rehoboth, Massachusetts. Born in Providence, Rhode Island, he studied at Taunton High School and the Rhode Island School of Design. During World War II he served as an armorer with the 379th Fighter Squadron and painted aircraft artwork.
His commercial career included printing, advertising and a 24-year tenure as art director at Fram Corporation. He produced illustrations for the Providence Journal, drew caricatures on local television, and painted portraits and landscapes. His golf cartoons included the book Only Golfers Know the Feeling.
Carpenter joined the Providence Art Club in 1952 and served on its board. He also spent 26 years as a trustee of the Rehoboth Antiquarian Society and supported the Carpenter Museum.
He married Nancy Alberta Walker in 1949. Their daughter was Polly Jane Carpenter. His obituary names grandchildren Tymor and Karima Carpenter Hamamsy. Nancy died in 2013; Joe died on September 18, 2014.
