The life of Samuel Chesebrough Sr.

Biography

Samuel Chesebrough was born at Stonington, on Connecticut’s southeastern coast, on February 14, 1673/74, a son of Nathaniel Chesebrough and Hannah Denison. His father died in November 1678, when Samuel was still a young child. Hannah later married Joseph Saxton, so Samuel’s upbringing included the rebuilding of a household after his father’s death.

His own marriage took him to Duxbury, on the Massachusetts coast north of Plymouth, where he married Priscilla Alden on January 4, 1699/1700. Their children’s births place the family back in the Stonington community: Mary in 1702, Priscilla in 1704, Nathaniel in 1706, Amos in 1709, Hannah in 1712, Sarah in 1715 and Prudence in 1722. Nathaniel died in 1709, not yet three years old.

Samuel and Priscilla also remained connected to her Massachusetts inheritance. In 1724 they jointly conveyed her quarter interest in land belonging to her father, David Alden, to John Seabury.

Samuel made his will on January 19, 1735/36 and died on March 2, according to the date preserved in his estate inventory. His will named Priscilla.
