The life of John Haskell Sr.

Biography

John Haskell and Patience Soule married in January 1666 and made their home in Middleborough, inland from Plymouth in present-day Massachusetts. Land conveyed by Patience's father, George Soule, became an important part of their family property. A deed dated January 26, 1668/69 granted Patience and John half of George's share at Namassakett, the place also called Middleborough.

The gift included upland and meadow. Its terms anticipated what would happen if either spouse died without a child: the surviving husband or wife would retain the property. The deed therefore provided for the couple together while explicitly protecting Patience's position. Their son John was born in June 1670.

George Soule returned to the subject in 1677. His will acknowledged the Middleborough land already given to his daughters, and a later addition threatened to disinherit his son John Soule if he recovered Patience's land from her. John Soule was Patience's brother. The provision was intended to protect Patience's ownership of the land.

Patience died in March 1706. John survived her only until May 15. An inventory of his estate was taken on June 29, 1706; the published probate account identifies it as the surviving record of his estate in the county probate volumes.

The burial listing associates John Haskell Sr. with Standish Burial Ground, Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, United States.
