The life of Charles Hecquet
Biography
The compiled family chronology places Charles Hecquet’s birth at Abbeville, in Picardy in northern France, on October 11, 1646, the son of Antoine Hecquet and Marguerite Gomart. His working life differed from the rope trade of the preceding generations. Family records describe him as a brewer and a censier, a farmer holding land under a tenancy.
He married Marie Anne Ponce, also recorded as Pons. Their family became established at Biache-Saint-Vaast, farther east in what is now Pas-de-Calais, where their son Pierre François was born on March 21, 1680. That birth places the household in the village that would recur through several later generations of the family. Charles died on August 9, 1690.
