The life of Mehitable Sturgis
Biography
Mehitable Sturgis was born at Yarmouth on Cape Cod, the peninsula in southeastern Massachusetts, on November 17, 1723, according to the family reconstruction. Her parents were Edward Sturgis and Mehitable Hallett. She married Ebenezer Hinckley of Barnstable, and their children included Temperance.
Her married name also appears in an indexed abstract of her mother’s will. The abstract names Mehitable Hinckley among the daughters receiving bequests, alongside Abigail Sturgis, Jerusha Hawes, and Mary Gorham. The bequest connects her Sturgis birth family with her married name.
Mehitable died on November 14, 1773. The Lothrop Hill Cemetery survey identifies her as Ebenezer’s wife and gives her age as fifty. The recorded birthday and cemetery age differ by three days. Ebenezer died in 1780.
