The life of Ebenezer Hinckley

Text size

Biography

Ebenezer Hinckley lived in the Barnstable area of Cape Cod, the peninsula extending into the Atlantic from southeastern Massachusetts, in the eighteenth century. The family reconstruction gives his birth as September 10, 1712 and identifies his parents as Ebenezer Hinckley and Sarah Lewis. He married Mehitable Sturgis of Yarmouth; their children included Temperance.

The most tangible surviving record of Ebenezer’s life is his gravestone at Lothrop Hill Cemetery in Barnstable. Its transcribed inscription records his death on June 12, 1780, in his sixty-eighth year. The stone has a winged head, which the cemetery survey compares with the work of the Geyer carvers of Boston.

Mehitable had died in November 1773. Ebenezer survived her by more than six years, and both are recorded in the same cemetery survey.
