The life of Hannah Carpenter

Biography

Hannah Carpenter was a daughter of Obadiah Carpenter and Bethiah Carpenter. She married Zachariah Carpenter on May 29, 1760, and established her household at Rehoboth, in what is now southeastern Massachusetts. Their first recorded child, Bethiah, was born in May 1762. Benjamin, Zachariah, Hannah, Otis, Patty and Esther followed.

The youngest, Esther, was born in April 1775. That autumn brought two deaths close together. Patty died on September 15, aged three, and Hannah's husband died on October 1. Hannah was thirty-five, with children whose ages ranged from infancy to thirteen.

Hannah lived for another fourteen and a half years. Her children reached adulthood during that interval; Otis, only five when his father died, was twenty by the time she died on April 20, 1790. The family genealogy later records marriages and separate households for several of the surviving children.

Her own chronology is anchored by the parents' household at Attleborough, Massachusetts, her marriage at the beginning of the 1760s, the births of her children, and a long widowhood beginning in 1775.

The family chronology places Hannah’s birth around 1740.

The burial listing associates Hannah Carpenter with Hillside Cemetery, Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts, United States.
