The life of Frances Watson

Text size

Biography

Frances Watson was a daughter of John Watson and Dorcas Gardiner. Her father was a tailor who also served in local offices, and she married into the Brown family through Daniel Brown. Their children included Elizabeth, Mary, Benjamin, Daniel, Elisha, Dorcas and John.

Daniel died in 1726, leaving Frances a widow. She appears under her married name in the abstract of her father’s will in the North Kingstown, Rhode Island, records, proved on March 11, 1728/29. The surviving text names Frances Brown among his daughters, alongside sons John, William and Samuel. That entry is a direct documentary connection between her birth family and her married identity.

Her daughter Dorcas married David Babcock in February 1730/31.
