The life of Mary Cruttenden
Biography
Mary Cruttenden was baptized at Hawkhurst, in Kent in southeastern England, on April 29, 1632. She was a daughter of Abraham Cruttenden and Elizabeth Usborne. Her mother's brother Peter named Mary and three of her siblings in his will later that year. The family subsequently settled at Guilford, on Connecticut’s southern coast.
Mary married George Bartlett at Guilford on September 14, 1650. Their seven known children were Elizabeth, Mary, John, Hannah, Deborah, Daniel, and Abraham. The youngest was still a small child when the household suffered several deaths in the summer of 1669.
George was buried on August 3 and their son John on August 16. Mary's burial followed on September 11. The surviving children had lost both parents within a few weeks. An inventory taken the following February recorded the family's property and household possessions, including John's clothing.
Their son Daniel was born in 1665, according to the cited Guilford birth transcription and published family reconstruction.
