The life of Ellen (Helen) Burgoyne
Biography
Ellen Burgoyne, also recorded as Helen, was the wife of John Leete of Eversden, in Cambridgeshire, England, near Cambridge. A baptismal entry at nearby Toft gives a glimpse of her outside her immediate household: on October 10, 1539 she served as godmother to Alice Sutton and was described as a gentlewoman.
Her family included sons William, Edmund, Robert, Thomas, and Henry. John was buried at Little Eversden in December 1551, leaving Ellen a widow. By May 2, 1564 she too had died, and administration of her estate was granted to their son Thomas.
The godmother's entry and the estate administration mark different parts of her life: a place in the wider parish community and the final settlement of her own affairs.
