The life of Robert Leete

Text size

Biography

Robert Leete combined a university education with property interests in the Eversden villages in Cambridgeshire, England, near the university city of Cambridge. He received a Cambridge bachelor’s degree in 1544–45 and a master’s degree in 1548, and became a fellow of St. John's College. A deed of September 1551 identifies him by that fellowship when recording his acquisition of half an acre at Little Eversden. The land had been held by his brother Edmund.

In 1558 Robert joined a widow named Mary Leete in relinquishing claims to land in Great and Little Eversden to St. John's College. His connections with the university thus appear in transactions as well as in his education.

On April 6, 1573 Robert married Alice Grundy at Great Eversden. Seven children followed, with baptisms extending through 1585. Their youngest daughter, Phebe, later married George Parkhurst. Robert died without a will, and on February 17, 1598 administration of his estate was granted to Alice.
