The life of Thomas Fylbrigg

Text size

Biography

Thomas Fylbrigg lived at Bures St. Mary, in Suffolk, England, on the River Stour at the Essex county boundary, where he and his wife Elizabeth raised a large family in the later sixteenth century. Their children included Thomas, baptized in 1584, who eventually settled in New England. The family's surname appears in several spellings, including Felbrigge and Filbrigg.

Thomas's life also appears in the local manor records. The published reconstruction identifies him as an ale-taster in 1608 and a searcher of cloth in 1620. These were practical responsibilities within the community, involving the oversight of products important to local trade.

Elizabeth was buried in April 1619. Thomas was still living after 1621. His adult life remained centered on the Suffolk community in which his children had been baptized.

The later family surname also appears as Philbrick.
