The life of Julien (Gillyen) Lamprey

Text size

Biography

Julien Lamprey, whose name was also written Gillyen and Juliana, came from England with Henry Lamprey. Their family lived in Boston, Massachusetts, before moving to Hampton, on the coast of present-day New Hampshire, about 1660. The deaths of two daughters named Mary marked those years: one died in infancy after her birth in 1654; the other, born in 1658, died in Hampton in June 1663. Their son Benjamin had been born there in 1661.

Julien was named in her own right in an October 1667 court order. She and Henry were bound to keep good behavior toward Abraham and Mary Cole until the next Salisbury court. The brief entry puts her directly into the legal record of the neighborhood.

She died on May 10, 1670. Later family tradition gave her a remarkable dowry: her own weight in gold, supposedly kept in a chest preserved by the family. Dow included the story in his Hampton history as something handed down through generations; it belongs to the family's remembered account of Julien rather than to a surviving marriage settlement.

Her maiden surname has not been established.
