The life of Henry Lamprey

Text size

Biography

Henry Lamprey came from England with his wife, Julien, and lived for several years in Boston, Massachusetts, before moving to Hampton, on the coast of present-day New Hampshire, about 1660. The family history describes him as a cooper. Two daughters named Mary were born in Boston, in 1654 and 1658; the first died in infancy, and the second died in Hampton in 1663. Benjamin was born after the move, in September 1661.

Henry and Julien appear together in the Hampton court records of October 1667. The court bound both of them to keep good behavior toward Abraham Cole and his wife, Mary, until the next Salisbury court. The order records a specific dispute involving the couple, though it does not describe what had brought the households into conflict.

Julien died on May 10, 1670. Henry lived for another thirty years, dying on August 7, 1700. A deposition in which he gave his age as fifty in 1666 supports the approximate birth year of 1616. His life connected an English origin, a Boston household, and four decades in Hampton.
