The life of Sarah Swett Hobbs

Text size

Biography

Sarah Swett was born in Newbury, on the northeastern Massachusetts coast, on November 7, 1650, a daughter of Benjamin Swett and Hester Weare. Her family moved to Hampton in 1662 or 1663, when she was about twelve, settling on the Falls side of the town, the area that became Hampton Falls in New Hampshire.

Her father was killed in the fighting of June 1677. Within the following year, her mother married Stephen Greenleaf and Sarah married Morris Hobbs. Sarah and Morris's wedding took place on June 13, 1678. They lived on the Hobbs homestead, and their first recorded child, Esther, arrived in April 1679.

Sarah's children were born over the next sixteen years. She lived to see several marry and establish households of their own, but also experienced the death of her youngest recorded son, Jonathan, in 1715. Sarah died on December 8, 1717. Her mother survived her briefly, dying the following January.
