The life of Hannah Knowles Locke
Biography
Hannah Knowles was born on April 18, 1678 and married William Locke on November 23, 1699. Their household at Rye, on the New Hampshire coast, grew over more than twenty years. Jonathan was born in 1702, Abigail in 1706, Jemima in 1721, and the younger Hannah in 1724.
The children's record includes two early deaths: a daughter Hannah and a son Eliphalet. As the surviving children reached adulthood, their marriages drew the household into neighboring families. Abigail married Joses Philbrick; Jemima married John Blake of Greenland; and the younger Hannah married Jeremiah Berry.
Hannah's marriage to William lasted more than sixty-eight years. He died in January 1768, when both were around ninety, and she died on September 12, 1769 in her ninety-second year. Her long life is preserved in the continuity of that household, its losses, and the succession of children who grew up within it.
The burial listing associates Hannah Knowles Locke with Rye Central Cemetery, Rye, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, United States.
