The life of Patience Hobbs Lamprey
Biography
Patience Hobbs grew up at Little River in the Hampton area on the New Hampshire coast, in the household of James Hobbs and Lucy Dow. Born in 1734, she was one of nine children. Her parents had established their home on the old Hobbs place, and her childhood belonged to an extended family already closely connected with the Dow, Batchelder, and Lamprey households. She married Simon Lamprey, son of Benjamin Lamprey and Sarah Dow, and they settled in North Hampton. The pedigree identifies Polly, who married into the Moulton family, as their daughter; that connection remains provisional.
Patience reached adulthood during a painful period for her birth family. Her sister Sarah died in 1749. Then, between late December 1755 and mid-January 1756, her mother, brother Jonathan, and father died within twenty days. Her marriage placed her among another longstanding North Hampton family while the household in which she had grown up was being profoundly changed.
