The life of Mercy “Marcy” Tuttle Russell

Text size

Biography

Mercy, also recorded as Marcy, lived in Littleton, northwest of Boston in Massachusetts, with Captain John Russell during the first half of the eighteenth century. Their son John was born in April 1727. In August 1730 she gave birth to Peter, who died the following month. Samuel arrived in 1731 and Lucy in 1733; in 1737 another son was given Peter's name.

Those entries preserve a decade in which Mercy's household experienced both growth and the loss of an infant. Her son John later married Abigail Hildreth. Mercy died on January 1, 1754. Her gravestone identified her as Captain John Russell's wife and placed her in her fifty-second year. John lived until 1781.

The compiled genealogy identifies her as Mercy or Marcy Tuttle, but the maiden surname remains a probable identification.
