The life of Abigail Stearns Garfield
A short marriage in Watertown
Abigail Stearns married Benoni Garfield on January 10, 1706/07. The register from Watertown, just west of Boston in present-day Massachusetts, names both as residents of the town and records Samuel Angier as the minister who joined them.
She had been born in April 1681, the daughter of Samuel Stearns and Hannah Manning. Her father died while she was very young. Her mother lived on through Abigail’s childhood and marriage.
Abigail and Benoni’s daughter, also Abigail, was born on March 5, 1707/08. The marriage lasted only about three and a half years: Abigail Stearns Garfield died on July 11, 1710, leaving that young child. The Stearns genealogy expressly records one surviving child.
The Watertown birth record gives April 16, 1681; the competing 1680 year appears in later genealogies.
