The life of John Noyes Jr.

Biography

John Noyes was born at Bow, just south of Concord in New Hampshire, on March 13, 1744, a son of John Noyes and Abigail Poore. He married Mary Fowler and raised a large family in the same region. The Noyes genealogy lists ten children, including Abigail, John, Sarah, Abner, Jacob, Nancy, Isaac Chamberlain, Mary, George and Martha.

The New Hampshire family history edited by Ezra Stearns identifies John as a captain in the Revolutionary army. His captaincy is reported in the published genealogy; his precise service is uncertain.

His father died in 1770, and his mother’s subsequent dower assignment preserved for her a defined share of the family property. John’s own household continued through the Revolution and into the nineteenth century. His son Isaac’s recorded birth in 1781 falls within that wartime period, though the family sources do not establish whether John was then away on service.

John died on October 7, 1825, aged eighty-one. Mary survived him by a little over three months.
