The life of Sarah Knight Salter
Biography
Died 1807
Sarah Knight married Samuel Salter in Sudbury, west of Boston in Massachusetts, on October 15, 1753. Their early married years were spent in Stow. Five children were born there: Samuel, Sarah, Hannah, Mary, and Mercy. When the family moved to Ashburnham, farther northwest in Massachusetts near the New Hampshire border, in 1765, the youngest was about a year old and the eldest about eleven.
Sarah’s household continued to grow after the move. Lydia was born in 1766, followed by Thomas, Lois, and Phebe. Thomas was baptized in June 1769 and died in October, a loss recorded amid the sequence of births. These details make the move to Ashburnham part of a lived family chronology, with young children arriving at a new farm and more children born afterward.
Her daughter Mary married Jabez Marble in 1780 and later returned to live on the farm formerly occupied by Samuel. Sarah survived her husband, who died in July 1800, and spent about seven years as a widow. Stearns records her death on September 11, 1807.
