The life of Samuel Salter
Biography
Died 1800
Samuel Salter married Sarah Knight on October 15, 1753. Stow’s published vital records place the ceremony in Sudbury, west of Boston in Massachusetts. He and Sarah initially lived in Stow, where their first five children were born. In 1765 they moved with their young family to Ashburnham, farther northwest in Massachusetts near the New Hampshire border, and established a farm.
Four more children followed after the move. Their son Thomas, baptized in June 1769, died that October. The family’s older son, also named Samuel, is the man listed in the town history’s Revolutionary service account.
Samuel’s farm remained an important part of the family’s later life. His daughter Mary married Jabez Marble, and the Marble family register places that couple on the farm Samuel had formerly occupied.
He died on July 18, 1800. Stearns records a reported age of seventy-two while also considering—but explicitly not proving—an identification with a Samuel Salter born in Charlestown in 1730.
