The life of James Woodward
Biography
James Woodward appears as James Woodard in the published records of Spencer, in central Massachusetts west of Worcester. His marriage to Sarah Atwood was recorded on November 19, 1789. The spelling varies, but the names of his wife and children provide a more useful means of following this particular household.
Spencer’s birth entries name three sons of James and Sarah: Charles, born on February 17, 1790; Wilber, on March 11, 1792; and Tilley, on February 24, 1794. Together, the marriage and births place the couple in the town’s records across the opening years of their family life.
This Tilley was probably the Tilly Woodward who later married Marinda Wight.
