The life of Andre Jarret dit Beauregard
Biography
André Jarret's Canadian holding consisted of islands. On August 17, 1674, Governor Frontenac granted him the fief known as the Îles-Beauregard, off Verchères in the St. Lawrence River, downstream from Montréal in present-day Québec, Canada. His half-brother François Jarret held the neighbouring seigneurie of Verchères. The brothers' properties placed their family on both the riverbank and the islands offshore.
André came from the Rual de Chapeaucornu area near Vignieu in southeastern France. He was baptized on August 9, 1642, a son of Jean Jarret and Perrette Sermette, whose surname also appears as Selmet. Beauregard was a name associated with family land in France before it became attached to his Canadian holding.
He married Marguerite Anthiaume at Montréal on January 12, 1676. A family history's account of their marriage settlement lists 1,200 livres in money and another 1,000 in furniture, jewellery and clothing. Those figures describe the property brought into the marriage, not the value of André's island estate.
In 1681 the census counted André's household at Verchères, with two young children, five cattle and twelve arpents under cultivation. More children followed during the decade.
By April 1692 André was dead. An inventory dated April 12 identifies Marguerite as guardian of five minor children: Anne, François, Louis, Joseph and Vincent. The youngest was recorded as only three months old. The estate papers leave the family at that moment, with a widow responsible for children ranging from an infant to a ten-year-old.
The burial listing places Andre Jarret dit Beauregard at Cimetière Saint-François-Xavier, Verchères, Monteregie Region, Québec, Canada.
On June 19, 1700, Joseph Tétreau, husband of Anne Jarret, requested permission to gather relatives to choose a guardian for André and Marguerite’s minor children. This was a later family proceeding, distinct from the inventory made after André’s death. BANQ
