The life of Louis Jarret (elder)
Biography
Louis Jarret belonged to the family of André Jarret and Marguerite Anthiaume. He was born in the late 1680s; the surviving compilations differ by about a year. In May 1709 he married Marguerite Saint-Aubin at Longueuil, across the St. Lawrence from Montréal in present-day Québec, Canada. Their children included Michel, Jeanne-Marguerite, Marie-Louise, Louis, Laurent and André. Their son Louis, born in 1717, later married Marie-Catherine Olivier.
The elder Louis married Élisabeth Legardeur at Contrecœur, farther downstream on the river’s south shore, on February 7, 1735. Élisabeth had already been married, and the combined family listing includes children named Sicard alongside the Jarrets. The Sicard children belonged to Élisabeth’s earlier marriage.
Francogene records his burial at Contrecœur on October 8, 1747. This places the end of his life more than thirty-eight years after his first wedding. His story links the Jarret family established by André and Marguerite Anthiaume with a new generation of households along the St. Lawrence.
