The life of Simonne Pichereau
Biography
On February 29, 1612, Simonne Pichereau arranged an apprenticeship for her son Nicolas. She was a widow by then. According to the published account, the agreement was made before Jean Fullone, a notary in Gallardon near Chartres in north-central France, and committed Nicolas to four years with Michel Delaval, a master carpenter. Delaval was to provide his apprentice's subsistence and clothing as well as instruction.
Simonne's family had been appearing in the Gallardon baptismal register since the early 1590s. Nicolas was one of several children, with younger siblings recorded into 1610. The apprenticeship gives a more individual glimpse of Simonne than the baptismal list: she appears as a participant in a legal arrangement for her son's future work.
