The life of Leonarde Joinault
Biography
Léonarde Jouault’s life can be followed through a marriage in rural France, the baptisms of her children, and the movement of her household to Québec. Her surname also appears as Joinault and Jonault. The marriage reconstruction identifies her as a daughter of Guillaume Jouault and Gabrielle Creste.
She married the carpenter Gervais Normand at Igé, in the Perche countryside of northern France, on June 3, 1636. Their son Jean was baptized the following year, and another son, Gervais, in 1641. The Fichier Origine entry for Jean records his presumed arrival in New France with his parents in 1647.
By February 1650, the family was represented in the parish records of Québec city, on the St. Lawrence River in present-day Canada, by the baptism of a daughter, Marie. Léonarde’s story therefore includes the establishment of a household on both sides of the Atlantic.
Her own death date remains unknown.
