The life of Perrette Selmet / Sermette

Biography

Perrette Selmet, recorded with several spellings of her name, was Jean Jarret’s second wife. Their son André was baptized at Salagnon, near Vignieu in the present-day Isère department of southeastern France, on August 9, 1642; Jacques followed on February 1, 1646. Their daughter Étiennette belonged to the same family.

André later married Marguerite Anthiaume in Montréal. Étiennette’s life remained documented in France: she married Antoine Martin, called Dagand, at Arcisse in 1678. Her children’s adult lives followed different paths in France and Canada.

Perrette was buried at nearby Vignieu on November 2, 1675, with her age recorded as sixty. Her burial preceded both of those children’s marriages. Her reported age suggests a birth around 1615.
