The life of Marie Sauvignac
Biography
Marie Sauvignac appears as a property owner in a sale made on February 3, 1663. Widowed after François Desorcy's death, she sold two pieces of vineyard at Sceaux, just south of Paris, France, to François Bezaleux, a lawyer in the Parlement. The land belonged to her in her own right. The price was thirty-six livres.
The notarial abstract adds that she acknowledged receiving payment in silver coin and could not sign.
Marie had married François at Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Sceaux on July 1, 1629. He was a winegrower. Their son Michel was baptized there in September 1630, beginning a family whose later history extended to La Rochelle and Canada.
By the time Marie sold the vineyard, Michel had established a household across the Atlantic. The two records reveal different parts of the family's economic life: a son's work in colonial commerce and his widowed mother's disposal of a modest property in France.
