The life of Jean Jarret
Biography
Jean Jarret’s family can be followed through the parish of Saint-Ferréol at Salagnon, near Vignieu in what is now the Isère department of southeastern France. His first wife was Claude de Pécaudy. Fichier Origine identifies five children of that union: Jehan, Clauda, Dominique, Gabrielle and François, whose baptisms run from 1624 to 1632. These entries place the family in France well before its later Canadian connections.
Jean’s second wife was Pernette, also called Perrette, Selmet or Sermet. Their children included André, Jacques and Étiennette. André was baptized in 1642 and Jacques in 1646. François from the first marriage and André from the second both became migrants to New France, while Étiennette’s later marriage is recorded in the same French region.
This was therefore a family with two distinct maternal lines and children whose adult lives unfolded on opposite sides of the Atlantic.
