The life of Francois Garnier (elder)
Biography
François Garnier married Antoinette Boulay on February 13, 1635 in the church of Saint-Cosme at Saint-Cosme-de-Vair, now part of Saint-Cosme-en-Vairais in the Sarthe area of western France. The marriage account places his brothers among those present, although it does not preserve their names. Marin Mauger and François Courant also witnessed the occasion.
Antoinette was already the widow of Jacques Guyet. With François she established a household whose children included Ambroise, François, and Gabriel. The younger François was baptized at Notre-Dame-de-Vair in February 1638 and later emigrated to New France.
The elder François was still living when Antoinette was buried at Notre-Dame-de-Vair on November 24, 1669. The family study identifies him and their son Gabriel among those present. His appearance there carries his own story beyond the younger François's departure: part of the family remained rooted in the parish where the marriage had begun.
