The life of Marin Boucher

Biography

Marin Boucher came from the Mortagne area of the Perche, a historic region west of Paris in France. His first marriage was to Julienne Barril, also recorded as Baril or Barry. After her death he married Perrine Mallet.

In 1634, Marin crossed to New France, France’s North American colony, with Perrine and three sons: François, Louis Marin and Jean Galeran. François belonged to his first marriage. The family settled beside the Saint-Charles River at Québec city on land belonging to the Récollets before Marin obtained a concession at Château-Richer, downstream from Québec city on the St. Lawrence’s north bank.

Marin also farmed with his brother-in-law Thomas Hayot on land leased from the Jesuits at Beauport, now part of Québec city. Their partnership ended in 1646, when Marin left and Thomas continued the undertaking. Marin died at Château-Richer on March 25, 1671.

The burial record associates him with Cimetière Visitation de Notre-Dame at Château-Richer.
