The life of Deacon John Stanton Noyes

Text size

An office accepted after another man declined

On June 19, 1723, the church at Stonington, in southeastern Connecticut, chose John Noyes and Moses Palmer as deacons. Moses refused the office. On July 3, the congregation selected Joseph Palmer in his place.

John was born on January 13, 1685, a son of the Reverend James Noyes and Dorothy Stanton. His father had died in 1719, four years before the election. The early source generally calls him John Noyes, although the current family record distinguishes him as John Stanton Noyes.

A family history describes him as a farmer and associates him with the house later known as the Moss House, built in 1714. He married Mary Gallup in 1715. Their children included William, John, James, Mary, Sarah and Anne; two sons were named Joseph at different points in the family chronology.

After Mary's death, John married Elizabeth Whiting in 1739. Their daughter Dorothy was born in 1740. These marriages and the church election supply the principal surviving outline of his adult life.

The accepted record dates his death to September 17, 1751.

The family history places his birth at Stonington and attributes the building of the Moss House near Westerly in 1714 to him.

The burial listing places Deacon John Stanton Noyes at Wequetequock Burial Ground, Stonington, New London County, Connecticut, United States.
