The life of Louis Houde

Text size

Biography

Louis Houde and Madeleine Boucher moved their household from Île d’Orléans, the St. Lawrence River island just downstream from Québec city, to Sainte-Croix, on the river’s south bank upstream from the city, in 1682. Québec’s heritage inventory describes ten children accompanying them, from a young adult to an infant. The move followed Louis’s acquisition of a substantial riverfront concession.

Their family had grown at Sainte-Famille on Île d’Orléans. At Sainte-Croix, Louis’s land became the site of the settlement’s first chapel, dedicated to the Infant Jesus, in 1694. The chapel stood on land Louis provided.

The family evidence names his parents as Noël Houde and Anne Lefebvre. It associates his burial with the historical Sainte-Croix de Lotbinière cemetery identified for the period 1694–1740.
