Biography

Jean-Philippe Lamarre's family record begins at Neuville, on the St. Lawrence’s north bank upstream from Québec city in present-day Québec, Canada, where his birth is given as March 10, 1687. He was the son of Louis Lamarre and Anne Cantin. His adult life is documented through two marriages and children recorded under Lamarre and related spellings such as Delamarre.

He first married Jeanne St-Aubin at Longueuil, across the St. Lawrence from Montréal, on November 6, 1712. Their children included Jean-Louis and Marie-Anne. Jeanne died in Montréal in April 1721. Two years later, Jean-Philippe married Marie-Françoise Jolivet there on May 19, 1723. The second household included Paul, Michel, Joseph-Marie and other children.

Notarial catalogues list contracts under Jean Lamarre’s name immediately before both weddings. The second contract is attributed to two different Lepailleur notaries in the surviving references.

Jean-Philippe outlived Marie-Françoise. He was buried at Saint-Philippe on December 25, 1766; his exact death date is unknown.
