The life of Louis-Etienne Gagne
Biography
Louis-Étienne Gagné’s marriage joined La Prairie, across the St. Lawrence from Montréal, with Pointe-Claire on Montréal Island; both are in present-day Québec, Canada. Born and baptized at La Prairie on August 25, 1686, he married Anne-Jeanne Tessier, called Marie-Anne in the family association’s account, at Saint-Joachim, Pointe-Claire, on May 27, 1715. Their contract had been drawn up a month earlier by the notary Barette.
Their family’s La Prairie records include children who died young: Marie-Catherine in 1727 at about two, Joseph-Hippolyte in infancy in 1732, and Eustache after seventeen days in 1733.
Louis-Étienne himself died on July 6, 1740 and was buried the following day at La Prairie. The family association’s compilation notes that his death record used the additional name Bellavance. His wife survived him until January 1750.
