The life of Jean-Baptiste Poissant
Biography
Jean-Baptiste Poissant was baptized at La Prairie, across the St. Lawrence from Montréal in present-day Québec, Canada, on July 20, 1700, a son of Jacques Poissant dit Lasaline and Marie-Marguerite Bessette. His father had come from France as a soldier; Jean-Baptiste's own recorded life began and ended in the Canadian parish where the family settled.
On February 6, 1747, he married Catherine-Charlotte Gagné at La Prairie. He was forty-six; she was twenty-three. Their family included Pierre, born in 1749, Marie-Françoise around 1750, and Charlotte in 1752.
Jean-Baptiste lived long enough to see those children reach adulthood. He died at La Prairie on December 18, 1774, aged seventy-four. Pierre's marriage to Véronique Bouchard followed in 1776. Across Jean-Baptiste's lifetime, La Prairie remained the recurring place in the family record—from his baptism, through his marriage, to his death.
