The life of Marie-Anne Monet
Biography
Marie-Anne Monet was born in July 1735 at La Prairie, across the St. Lawrence from Montréal in present-day Québec, Canada, the daughter of François Monet and Élisabeth Dumontet. At twenty, she married Michel Lamarre at Saint-Constant on May 31, 1756. Their family record follows children born between 1757 and 1777, from Michel to Marie-Angélique.
The household contained children at very different stages of life. While older children were growing up, younger ones were still being born. Three sons died in infancy: Joseph in 1759, François in 1771 and François-Régis in 1772. The latter two deaths occurred in successive summers.
Marie-Anne later saw children establish families of their own. Josephte and Marie-Geneviève married men from the Perrier family; Agathe married Louis Tremblay; Marie-Anne married Antoine Jarret. She survived Michel, who died in 1793, and her own death is reported on April 11, 1800 at Saint-Philippe. She was sixty-four.
