The life of Louis Jarret
Biography
Louis Jarret dit Beauregard was born at Saint-Sulpice, on the north bank of the St. Lawrence downstream from Montréal in present-day Québec, Canada, on January 13, 1717 and baptized the following day. He was a son of Louis Jarret and Marguerite St-Aubin. His mother died in 1734, when he was seventeen; his father subsequently married Élisabeth Legardeur.
At thirty-five, Louis married Marie-Catherine Olivier, also known as Perrier, at Saint-Constant on April 24, 1752. She had previously been married to François Dumont. Her daughters Catherine and Marie-Madeleine belonged to that earlier union. Louis and Marie-Catherine’s own children included Antoine, born in 1756, another Louis in 1758 and Hippolyte-Paul, whose listed birth year is 1760.
Louis died at Saint-Philippe on December 24, 1761, aged forty-four, and was buried two days later. Antoine was five and the younger Louis three. Their marriage had lasted less than ten years. Marie-Catherine survived him for more than four decades, carrying the family’s record into the nineteenth century.
