Amable Lesieur

Biography

Amable Lesieur, also associated with the name Desaulniers, was born at Yamachiche, near the north shore of Lake Saint-Pierre in present-day Québec, Canada, in August 1754. Her parents were Louis-François Lesieur and Louise Lemay. The family chronology places her father’s death in February 1756, when she was about eighteen months old, and her mother’s in June 1771, while she was still sixteen.

She married Jean-Baptiste Bergeron at Yamachiche on February 1, 1779. Their married life is followed through children including Charles, Judith, Louise and Théodore. Théodore was born in August 1800, more than twenty-one years after the wedding. The ages of the children ranged from adults to a small boy near the end of Amable’s life.

Charles married Marie-Louise Deblois in 1801. Amable died in the nearby community now called Louiseville on March 30, 1804 and was buried there the next day. She was forty-nine; Théodore was three. Her husband’s subsequent children belonged to his later marriage.
