The life of Antoine Jarret
Biography
Antoine Jarret was born on April 3, 1756 in the La Prairie area, across the St. Lawrence from Montréal in present-day Québec, Canada, the son of Louis Jarret and Marie-Catherine Olivier. His father's death is placed in December 1761, when Antoine was five.
At thirty-one, Antoine married Marie-Anne Lamarre at Saint-Philippe on August 13, 1787. Their children appear under Jarais and Charest as well as Jarret, making the parents' names important guides through the spelling changes. The first listed daughter, Marie-Anne, died in infancy in 1788. A later daughter received the same name in 1793.
Their son Barthélemy was born in 1790; Louis, Marie-Josephte and Marie-Catherine followed. Marie-Josephte died as a small child. The family connections can be followed into the children's marriages, including Barthélemy's marriage to Louise-Amable Poissant. A separate family history places Antoine’s death at Saint-Philippe in 1827, but the identification remains uncertain.
