The life of Jean-Baptiste Bergeron

Text size

Biography

Jean-Baptiste Bergeron was born in the community now called Louiseville, near Lake Saint-Pierre in present-day Québec, Canada, on May 7, 1758, the son of Charles Bergeron and Judith Paillé. He married Amable Lesieur at nearby Yamachiche on February 1, 1779. He was twenty and she was twenty-four. Their children included Charles, Judith, Louise and Théodore, whose listed births extend into 1800.

Amable died in March 1804, after twenty-five years of marriage. Jean-Baptiste married Marie Trépanier at Louiseville in January 1806 and began a second household. The children attributed to that marriage include Joseph, Honoré and Émérance. Émérance was born in March 1820, when her father was sixty-one. Older children from the first marriage were already adults with families of their own.

A burial in May 1821 has been attributed to Jean-Baptiste, although the cited record names the deceased as Charles. Marie Trépanier is recorded as marrying François Paillé in June 1822. The two marriages span more than forty years of family life, with children from different generations growing up under the same paternal name.
