The life of Marguerite Plante

Biography

Marguerite Plante was born around 1774 to François Plante and Louise Laroche. Her father died while she was still a child. Her mother later married Jean-Charles Leclerc, bringing a second marriage into the family in which Marguerite grew up.

On January 28, 1799, Marguerite married Louis Gagnon at the community now called Louiseville, near the north shore of the St. Lawrence’s Lake Saint-Pierre in Québec, Canada. Their children included Marie-Louise, Sophie, Sifroi, Flavie and Ursule. The published family account traces births from Marie-Louise in 1800 through Ursule in 1811, with later marriages connecting the children to neighbouring families.

Marguerite and Louis's later records belong to Saint-Léon-le-Grand. Louis died there on May 13, 1842. Marguerite lived another nine years, dying on July 9, 1851 and being buried on July 11.

Her burial account gives her age as approximately seventy-six. She had outlived both her parents and her husband, and her final record placed her in the same parish where Louis had died nine years before.
