Louis Gagnon

Biography

Louis Gagnon was born on June 2, 1774 at Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, on the north side of the St. Lawrence downstream from Québec city, the son of Pierre Gagnon and Marguerite Dassylva. His later family records belong farther upstream in present-day Québec, Canada, at the community now called Louiseville and nearby Saint-Léon-le-Grand, near Lake Saint-Pierre. Together, these places trace the broad geography of his life without revealing the timing or reason for each move.

On January 28, 1799, Louis married Marguerite Plante at Louiseville. Their children included Marie-Louise, Sophie, Sifroi, Flavie and Ursule. The names and marriages of these children connect the household with the Lefrançois, Savoie, Dulignon and Caron families.

Louis died at Saint-Léon-le-Grand on May 13, 1842 and was buried two days later. The reported burial age was seventy, whereas the stated birth date would make him sixty-seven. Marguerite survived him and died in 1851.
